Making a Difference to Our School
Friends of Gotherington School - FOGS
Every successful school has the backing of an active Parent/teacher association. At Gotherington we are called F.O.G.S.
What is FOGS?
For new parents, and a quick reminder for existing parents, FOGS stands for Friends of Gotherington School and is the school's PTA, or Parent Teacher Association. Our aim is simple, to help and support the school and in doing so advance our children's education and recreation at school. All parents, grandparents, teachers and school staff are automatically members of FOGS and everyone is encouraged to get involved.
What does FOGS do?
We fundraise in order to provide school with facilities, equipment or activities that it would not otherwise be able to make available to our children. Much of our fundraising consists of events. We aim for these events to be fun and enjoyable for pupils, parents and staff whilst strengthening the school community. We also promote activities which develop the children's awareness of social responsibility, for example we have links with a school in Sambel Kunda in the Gambia. From time to time we help out around school with things like planting and gardening.
What did FOGS raise last year?
Last year through the generosity and support of parents, the local community and businesses FOGS raised just over £10,000 from events like the Summer and Christmas Fairs, Christmas Market, Cake Sales, a Fashion Show, Clothes for a Cause collections, a Disco, Raffles and Ice-cream Sale. A huge thank you to everyone who helped, your generosity has benefitted the whole school.
So, how was it spent?
At the beginning of every term FOGS transfer money to school. This money is spent across six Curriculum Enrichment Funds - Art, Sport, School Trips, Music, ICT, Eco/School Grounds. The aim being that at the end of the year money will have been spent across each of these areas, benefitting every child in the school. Last year this money paid for a Pottery Workshop for every class run by a professional potter, a Samba Kit, Digital Cameras, a Traversing Wall, Basketball Hoops and other Playground Equipment and Olympic Sports Day trips.
In addition to these Curriculum Enrichments Funds FOGS also funded a visit from the Life Education Van for each class, the Christmas Pantomime, Gazeebos, Planters, Prizes for the Extreme Reading Competition, and a contribution towards the Year 6 leavers' disco.
We made donations to Children in Need, Sambel Kunda School and Holy Trinity Church, Tewkesbury, who organise a Christmas lunch for elderly members of the community.
Getting Involved
FOGS can only work with your support and involvement! Every bit of help counts and there are lots of different ways to get involved. It could be as simple as coming along and supporting an event like the Christmas Fair or buying a raffle ticket. Helping at, or helping to promote and run an event. Maybe suggesting new fundraising ideas? Donating some cakes for a class cake sale or helping out with some planting around the school.
Each class has two or more FOGS Class Reps. Class Reps keep their class updated with planned FOGS activities and are a visible FOGS point of contact for other parents. Class Reps organise their class' contribution to things like the Christmas and Summer Fairs. If you can spare some time, no matter how little, let your Class Rep know and they will be able to contact you as and when events are planned, to see if you can help. Many hands really do make light work and half an hour of help makes all the difference!

FOGS Meetings

Everyone is welcome to FOGS meetings, generally held once a term in the school hall. During meeting events for the coming term are discussed, we report back on how the money we have raised has been spent and look at the school's funding priorities. Dates for meetings are included in the FOGS section at the end of the school weekly newsletter.
We look forward to seeing you at FOGS events in the coming year!
