French is our main modern foreign language taught in Key Stage 2 by a specialist French teacher. Each class is taught for one hour every fortnight, with reinforcement activities provided in non-teaching weeks.

French is taught through stories, songs, poems, rhymes and games following the objectives of the National Curriculum KS2 languages programme of study.

Each lesson builds on high-frequency grammatical structures, phonics and vocabulary learned in the previous lessons. Lessons provide opportunities for speaking and listening, with reading and some writing where relevant. Lessons are interactive and French is spoken as much as possible. Lessons are adapted and tailored to meet the needs of our children from the 'La Jolie Ronde' scheme of work.

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

We also offer extra curricular opportunities in French and Spanish with popular lunchtime and after school languages clubs.
