Intent
At Gotherington, our aim is to deliver an engaging and inspiring music curriculum, which instills a love of music in all of our children. Children at Gotherington gain an understanding of what music is through performing, listening to, reviewing and evaluating music from a diverse range of genres, traditions and historical periods. We are committed to fostering an appreciation and respect for all types of music, as well as developing children's understanding of the importance of music in the wider community. All pupils at Gotherington have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence through singing and using their voice, composing and learning to play musical instruments. Children also develop their understanding of the dimensions of music.

Implementation
All year groups at Gotherington follow the Charanga scheme of work. Within music lessons, children will have regular opportunities for listening and appraising; creating and exploring and singing and performing. This scheme ensures that children have exposure to a wide range of musical genres, whilst developing their skills as musicians. The dimensions of music are also taught within the scheme, providing children with the vocabulary and understanding to dissect and understand how music is created. As children progress through the school, they will learn to engage more critically with music, which will inform their composition and analysis of music.
Music is embedded at Gotherington, not just within the classroom. All children take part in weekly singing assemblies, have opportunities to attend and perform in concerts, learn musical instruments from expert visitors and take part in extra-curricular music clubs including choir and ukulele. Children who attend instrument lessons are also encouraged to celebrate their talents by performing to their peers.

Impact
Whilst at Gotherignton, children will engage in a diverse range of musical activity, designed to inspire and enthuse them about music. Children will have the chance to discover strengths, talents and passions, as well as areas they can improve. They will learn the skills which allow them to appreciate and enjoy music as a performer, listener or creator. They will have an understanding of music from around the world, throughout history and from a range of genres. Additionally, through their music education, children will develop their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement, alongside their musical knowledge, skills and understanding.
